The Watershed

Picture of a lake

The Chesapeake Bay watershed covers about 64,000 square miles and includes parts of six states—New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia—and the District of Columbia. There are about 150 major rivers and streams in the watershed.

For many of us, the Bay means food and fun. The Bay is one of the world’s most productive estuaries, providing not only some of the best seafood on the planet, but a livelihood for thousands of people in our region. While the Bay and its tributaries are cleaner now than they were several years ago, the clean-up effort has become more challenging. But the good news is that when a lot of us make little changes—such as using less fertilizer, planting trees and shrubs in our yards and using landscape alternatives —we can enjoy the Bay and its bounty for years to come.
